i’m not unfaithful, but i’ll stray, when i get a little scared October 30, 2007
lots o’ info. to report.
work has been calm. the trip to the mothership went well. met tons of people. some i had met before, some were new. got a tour of the best and brightest of the collections. neat stuff. i always get scared that i’ll damage something.
good weekend. friday night i did some sewing for an up coming project, more details when they are secured… saturday i bummed about, met one of the fam. members and ate some pizza. sunday i met my old library school pal, t, for dinner and a chat. fun fun. good food, good conversation. potato leek soup at the library is so good. i stopped a few places before heading home.
i just realized that i have to work early early a few days this week.
oh, i am going to be helping out at a public library to teach knitting, cool, eh? at the oldest carnegie. (if anyone is interested, they are taking volunteers, they want as many instructors/ tutors/ teachers as possible, which i think is a cool idea, knitting isn’t the kind of thing to teach in a big lecture setting…)
i am supposed to be writing an application for a summer program, but i just cannot get it together. i am so out of the long school writing mode. sigh.
what other news. oh, my birthday. i am thinking about not really doing anything for it. i swear it is not even some kind of reaction to turning a certain age, it’s just that i can’t be bothered to think about who to invite, where to go. really, i wanted to go to bedford springs and act like i was a richy back in the day, but it’s a bit expensive. if anyone wants to give me like $500 for my birthday so i can not only have the nice room but also the $200 spa credit, feel free.
did anyone else see the richard mellon scaife article in the washington post. hilarity. lots of good info. particularly about my hometown and it’s sleazy motels. great.
ok, i have to get writing and i don’t mean on my blog. over and out.
this is what people who don’t have cable think about. October 24, 2007
omg, when i am at the mothership for work, i think i will be able to see the office, and scrubs, holy shit. the thought is just too much for me. i love the fact that i want to be back in my hotel room asap in order to watch tv. yes!!!
i have the beginnings of a cold. i am hoping to blast it out again with the airborne and echinecea combo. i am sure it won’t work. cough cough.
i’m (sort of) a terrible blogger October 16, 2007
it’s been a while.
m subtly reminded me that i never blogged about the house/apt. warming party/ get together.
it was fun, the end.
no really, i had a good time- i made a lot of food and got some drink, others brought their own drink to share with others plus people brought even more food, their food was tops i have to say. fmz brought a cheese ball that was Gorgonzola and pistachios. oh my gosh. good times. basically everyone i invited was able to make it. even if they worked like m, they showed up later. i have to say, i surprised myself, some how pulling all the food together, even in the face of rotten broccoli and other random mishaps. people just really brought the most amazing things. it was just crazy. i have kept the orchid m bought me alive this long, i think (hope) i can keep that going. books, vases, dishes, seriously, my friends are the goods. i know it sounds cliche, but i didn’t expect people to buy me stuff, that was random to me. (BTW, google spell check does not recognize cliche. it’s a word, google, trust me).
(WAIT, i just checked and I HAVE blogged about the party. m is just a terrible reader of sort of crafty). i knew that i did this already. mo fo.
well now i feel compelled to write something that you want to read.
oh, this weekend. i’ll blog about that.
so typical friday night, coffee with c. saturday AM the same, with d and fmz. we (except for c) made plans to meet up at the opening at DV8 later that night. saturday was a big day- a faculty member where i work was having a chili party (it has a particular name, but seriously for the purposes of this blog being picked up on google, i won’t write it out, remember when sarah mc laughin had that traveling concert in the summer, change the first word to use the word chili and you have it). so i went to that, good times even though, shhh i hate chili, in it’s terrible tomato-y existence. but i ate some, veggie chili with bulgar wheat. other food was good, nice selection of beer. i missed having a pumpkin ale b/c i was so distracted by all the good beer. i made jalapeno blue corn bread and took some pumpkin cake cookies. hung out there for a bit. since it was about 12 minutes from my house, i was super excited. my kind of party, limited effort on my part.
went home, watched some of season 2, i can’t tell if i like that show or not. aside from the total implausibility of it all, i don’t know. i watch completely unrealistic shows all the time, but somehow this one bothers me a bit, yet i watch, why, b/c i have NO CABLE.
met up with the z’s for the opening. chatted with some peeps, had some drinks. yeah. i slept so well that night. the best night of sleep yet. amazing.
got up early on sunday AM to meet the fam to go on an ikea run- they were curious to see what was new and i was excited for company all the way out there. how is ikea such an event? when i lived in md, we had an ikea so close it totally threw the world out of balance- if travelling to ikea is not an event, what will happen? good to know i am back in the burgh where ikea is 46.5 miles from where i live. the way it should be.
got some foot stools that i had been thinking about, extra seating, functional yet attractive. some new lamps, and just odds and ends. ran into j and n, random, we discussed the fact that we have the same lamps.
the fam and i also stopped at our favorite bakery/ bread place, Mancini’s in mckees rocks. so freaking good.
yesterday i ventured to the eye dr. (apparently one eye is farsighted and the other is nearsighted, most people like that don’t even wear glasses b/c the eyes cancel out… random). sure i chose my eye dr. by the fact that the store had glasses i actually wanted to buy, as opposed to the other places that had no glasses i wanted. maybe i am super picky, but i have to say that amount of $ for the glasses (after my insurance) is still insane. also, it takes 7-10 business days to get my glasses. thank goodness i didn’t just want to update my current frames, i would be blind for nearly two weeks. i guess i thought since the invention of lens crafters and since even my old non chain eye dr. had my glasses ready in an hour, everyone did. crickees. i guess my expectations were some what different than the reality, that’s all.
rest of the week- haircut, the wedding, and then sunday i hope to do NOTHING. don’t worry, it’s not me getting married, i swear.
now reading/ viewing:
a book of photobooth pictures. checked it out of the library today, may want the companion postcard set…..
it’s fall. tights are back. October 11, 2007
it is so darn freezing in my “office/cube” today- it’s like winter outside. too bad i didn’t have any proper warm coat to wear this AM, i just wore about 2040000 layers.

Could you Be Replaced by a Robot?
via LISNews.org by birdie on 10/7/07
Possibly, if you’re an employee of Macquarie University and the University of Technology, Sydney, Australia. Because university collections are large, many books are stored away from the public and shelvers are employed to retrieve them. The drones (robots) would resemble computerised cranes with robotic arms to collect volumes from storage. More from The Sydney Morning Herald.Read more of this story at LISNews.org.
What came first, the music or the misery? October 7, 2007
… Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?
(btw, did you know that wikiquote existed? i sure didn’t until today when i looked up the high fidelity quote…. yes, c, there is a page with office quotes, it’s here)
i was supposed to get to the apple fest this AM, but time ran out before i had to be to work (again). sigh. not cider from a 100 year old press for me. guess i’ll just have to stick to the coffee shop variety, which is great, i guess i don’t know what i am missing, right?
ok, let’s start with the recap of the party. i think it went well, a ton of people showed up, people i thought weren’t coming could come, etc. my wine key was stolen, but stolen by m, so that’s wasn’t a big deal. people brought the most amazing food and apartment items, i couldn’t even believe it. i was overwhelmed. good times. i had to work the next day, which wasn’t such a great plan, but everyone was out of the apartment by 130 or so; i slept nearly immediately leaving the clean up for another time (which was basically wednesday…..). i suck, i know. i hope everyone else had a good time.
on monday a turkey flew in front of my car, those guys are SLOW flying.
what else happened this week. knitting, what a bummer to have no one coming out to knitting any longer.
maybe it’s just that it isn’t cold yet, or maybe people don’t knit any more. it’s nice to catch up with friends, but i also feel bad that the coffee shop isn’t getting good business from the knitters anymore. sigh. maybe if we had a flyer….
last night i went over to b & g’s, well and bones too, to see the new house in the g-field. really giant, nice house, jealous a bit. i can’t get over how giant the place was, good peeps at the party. bones, who i don’t think i had seen in months at least, gave me some weird trim from the 60s/ 70s that is amazing pea soup green and orange. i can’t wait to use it. couldn’t stay long b/c i had to meet the der-town crew in irwin for a show. by the time i got there, i felt run down and slightly sad, and just weird. i don’t know. lots of fun and games until d-w decided to talk about two of my phobias at the same time. i hear that it’s a common topic to talk about how much i hate the song 70s song that is my name and the voices of electro-mechanical device which does work. apparently, it’s even more hilarious thinking about those two things together. sigh. i cringe thinking about it. d-w might have thought he was going to make me cry at one point. ask my parents, i think since i have known what my name is, i have hated that DS song. urgh.
this morning i woke up with a sore throat, i can’t tell if it’s the terrible cold that everyone has, or if it’s from my hard living lifestyle of hanging out in shady bars to listen to bands, and breathing in second hand smoke, and yelling when i speak to people due to said band volume. so i am taking airborne throat things to try and avoid the sick.
